Mission Statement:

To give young authors and illustrators a creative outlet to tell important true stories in a children's story book form.  Also, to give their readers a seed plant sparking interest to become lifelong learners on the subject.

The connection the books provide may help them connect with the pain and suffering of this time period while understanding the triumph of
survival -  the hope a survivor story brings.

NOTE: All authors in this program are age 18 or younger
but our readers can be any age!

Through understanding the lessons of Holocaust and Civil Rights stories we would like to help students recognize they can make a difference by:

  • Treating other with respect
  • Being kind and compassionate
  • Being courageous
  • Tolerance / working together
  • Persevering
  • Embracing differences
  • Understand consequences / cause and effect
  • Asking questions

I introduced the books to the students and made them available to them to read in their free time in class.  I used two of them, Yanina Ballerina and Ester Katz, as read alouds to let the students put themselves into that time period.  The students picked them up in class whenever they had a free minute and begged to take them to finish reading them.  They were really impressed that they were written by students like themselves.  They are a great addition to our library on WWII and the Holocaust.
