The Three R's of Illustrating:
Read the story thoroughly.
Research the time period paying specific attention to clothing, hairstyles, surroundings, buildings, roads, automobiles, trains, etc.
Reach to the edge of the page - use your colored pencils, crayons or markers to fill the space as much as possible to make for a eye catching illustration.
Make sure your illustrations do not cover up the words making them hard to read.
